Emerica Stay Gold Premiere Report

I made my way down to L.A. this weekend to checkout the unavailing of Emerica’s latest and greatest video “Stay Gold.” The location for the premiere couldn’t have been any better. Taking advantage of the summer weather, the Ford Amphitheater nestled in the Hollywood hills was the perfect spot to take in skateboarding’s latest masterpiece.

After dealing with the fiasco of trying to score a free beer in the PBR room I was soon over that and made my way down to take a seat. The video starts off on a bitter sweet note.

One of my long time favorites, Heat Kirchart, opens the video with what is pretty much a farewell video part. He kills shit as usual, ending his short but sweet section with an unexpected backside 360 nose grab on Bob Burnquist’s mega ramp.

Brandon Westgate starts off the main section of the video with a bang. With one of the most hyped parts leading up to it, Brandon came through with fling colors. If you really didn’t know how good this kid was before this video, you sure as hell do now.

Bryan Herman starts off his two parts with a kickflip nose manual down and around an entire block of Hollywood boulevard. His first part consisted of nothing but picnic tables. Putting together lines and mega popped flip tricks over assorted tables. His second part consisting of the usual hardflips and hand rails Herman is known for killing in a laid back manner.

Marquise Preston was up next. I was sitting in the aisle right next to an exit door and happened to see Marquise being forcefully removed about 15 seconds before his part came on. He missed himself doing some of the cleanest bigspins around. Defiantly a solid part.

After Mr. Preston, Kevin Long was up next. He has one of the better styles out there in skateboarding and his knee injury defiantly played a roll in his parts length, but not in his parts quality. He skated everything in his part leaving you wondering how good his part could have been if he had been healthy.

Colin Provost is a tranny killer(park wise not rocky horror picture wise). Colin is up there with Grant Taylor as the leader of the next generation of tranny kings.

Jerry Hsu had a part of all his stressing moments he had while filming for Stay Gold, followed by his part, cut short due to injury just like Spanky. If I remember correctly his part was all siwtch/nollie.  Even though it was a shortened part, it was one of my favorites in the video.

Braydon came through with his usual flair. Part was on the short side but it still was solid.

Aaron Suski is the sleeping giant of this video. His part was unexpectantly good. With all the Reynolds/Westgate hype, Suski somehow flew under the radar and surprised most of the 1200 people in attendance.

Figgy and his pro debut followed. Figgy uses his tall lanky size to it’s full effect killing some of the tallest handrails with ease. Including smith grinding the waist high 20(stair count?) that Rowley boardslid a few years back.

Everyone was wondering if Reynolds or Leo would have last part. No one should have doubted the Boss. He took the last part crown yet again but that doesn’t mean that Leo’s part didn’t deserve it either.

Leo and his high speed I don’t give a fuck style defiantly was a pleasure to watch. Going down rails, up rails and killing anything in his path, Leo shows that he is leading skatboarding into a new era of handrail destruction.

Yes, the last part king Andrew Reynolds yet again stole the show. You could tell Drew tried his ass of for this part, doing everything in his classic boss steez. Two standout tricks for me were his varial heel down Hollywood 16, and his noseslide 270 shuv it out on the La Canada side ledge that is to tall to fuck with unless your Andrew.

In all “Stay Gold” lived up to the extensive hype that was created around the video over the last few years. Everyone had solid parts making an instant classic. Do yourself a favor and pick a copy up on September first. Watching this one over the computer just wouldn’t do it any justice.
